Your one-stop shop for Luther Vandross, extended political metaphors, impending economic armageddon, and relentless optimism about West Indies cricket.
@KeithLove2025 No my poor deluded friend, he said: 'What I'd like to say is there are similar numbers...', which perhaps said something about his own allegiances, or his BBCish desire for neutrality. But he then made clear the reality, as per the verbatim quote above.
Matt Graveling, BBC: “Of all the events I’ve covered in 15 years as a broadcast journalist, this is without doubt the biggest event I’ve seen people-wise in any sport, in any country. There are so many more people here for Arsenal today than there were for Tottenham last year.”
@martinsheehan Come come, we can't belittle each other's successes. That would be like me questioning Spurs' Europa League triumph last year because you only had to be the 37th best team in Europe to win it.
Despite only winning two European trophies in our history, I think tonight's result makes Arsenal the only British side to have qualified for a European final in each of the last six decades, 1970s to 2020s. Is that right, @HarveyDownes92@TomEde1?
My beloved Arsenal fans.. Don’t be too disappointed… Be proud of this team and everything they’ve achieved. Keep believing and keep supporting them the way you always do. We are in the right direction. I’m so happy I got to experience this game from the stands with the Arsenal family for the very first time ❤️ Thank you for the incredible welcome and all the love. You made me feel like I’m really one of you, next year will be our time. Love you Gunners 🙏❤️
@KevBailey10 It was the final of the Mercantile Credit Trophy, held to mark the centenary of the Football League, and played out between the top eight sides from the year before. Arsenal beat QPR and Liverpool to reach the final at Villa Park, beating Man Utd 2-1.
If you're looking back at Michael Thomas scoring his legendary goal on this day in 1989, you might wonder what he was doing with his celebration. From earlier the same season, this is what it would have looked like, if he hadn't been interrupted at Anfield by Martin Hayes.
@JeremyArnold31 Good spot! It was the final of the Mercantile Credit Trophy, held to mark the centenary of the Football League, and played out between the top eight sides from the year before. Arsenal beat QPR and Liverpool to reach the final, and won 2-1 vs United.
@Desmond47227741@mak_down_under You can say that again. The passes he played, on the pitches he played on, just sublime. And I've still never seen anyone since who has tried to play those 'wedge shot' free kicks or long passes the way he did, despite how impossible to defend they always were.
This time, not celebrating, but rueing a missed chance against West Ham, with the same manoeuvre. David Rocastle slipping him through this time, as Paul Davis had done in the previous clip. What a trio.
Here's the end-of-season list for the highest average attendances in English league football. For the third year running, The Arsenal are the only club with two teams on the list, with Arsenal Women gaining the most places compared to last year, followed by Coventry and Everton.
@djestoke This is all league games played at home by all English teams. If we're going to broaden the field, then it would have to take into account - for example - Coventry's 10,595 crowd vs. Luton in the first round of the Carabao, or Fulham's 11,749 vs Bristol City in the second round.
It's incredibly sad to think that the Arsenal XI which started against Barcelona never played together on the same pitch again, nor the XI which gave Arsenal the lead. But it's all the more reason that the magic of that day in Lisbon is now frozen in time.
