Atlanta rapper who lit cash on fire is charged in a $4 million SNAP fraud scheme exposed by Vice President JD Vance’s task force as part of a $42 million crackdown.

Mercedes New, known as Shawty Dred, is accused of using stolen identities from Georgia’s Division of Family and Children Services between 2020 and 2026 to create more than 350 fake accounts and have EBT cards mailed to multiple Atlanta addresses.

Prosecutors say he also registered his company Shawty Dred LLC as an authorized SNAP retailer and used fraudulently obtained cards and a point-of-sale device to siphon roughly $4 million from the program.

A federal grand jury indicted him on 46 counts of mail fraud, 15 counts of aggravated identity theft, and counts of SNAP fraud and illegal transactions with access devices. Federal agents arrested him on October 13.

Vice President JD Vance highlighted the case at a Cincinnati press conference, noting that the $42 million uncovered would have fed 220,000 Americans for a month and that SNAP exists to help hungry children, not to fund private jets and luxury cars.

New has more than two million Instagram followers and previously posted videos of himself with stacks of cash, luxury vehicles, and burning dollar bills.
