I have today signed the NIMC Act 2026 into law.

For nearly twenty years, Nigeria’s identity system operated under a law written for a different era. That era is over.

This new Act gives our nation a modern, secure and digital identity framework fit for the Nigeria we are building, a Nigeria on the path to becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy.

The NIMC act gives impetus to the implementation of a digital public infrastructure . A policy anchored on 3 pillars:- Digital identity, Digital payments, and secure data exchange.

The passage of this act also unlocks $450 million from world bank as funding under the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) Project( only $45 million disbursed so far) while also strengthening the country’s leverage in the disbursement of the already approved $500 million financing for the Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth (BRIDGE) Project, and $250 million for the Health Security Program in Nigeria.

This is not just an act, it’s a foundational shift toward a more secure, efficient, and digitally empowered Nigeria.
