The 82 KM long Dimapur โ Kohima New Line Project was sanctioned in 2006 โ 07, but for the first eight years, work could not be started due to extremely low budgetary allocation from the Central Government for this project. In 2015 โ 16, for the first time, a substantial budget grant of Rs 300 Crores was provided, which permitted the project to be started at full scale.
Prior to 2014, problems in land acquisition led to the project being held up. However, after 2015 โ 16, through the proactive efforts undertaken by the national government through the PRAGATI Portal, all issues were resolved swiftly and successfully with the full cooperation of all stakeholders.
Through these efforts, the first section from Dhansiri to Shokhuvi was successfully commissioned in October 2021 and the next section from Shokhuvi to Molvom was also commissioned in March 2025. Presently, trains are already running on a regular basis in these sections.
Further, work on the remaining portion of the project from Molvom to Zubza near Kohima is progressing rapidly. The entire land acquisition process of 835 Hectares has already been completed. Construction of bridges, tunnels, railway stations and other railway infrastructure is going on in full swing, and the project is going to be completed soon.
