@clinton_darius@jamarperry I may try to self pub MG under a different Pen at some point once I get more experience. If it can bring even one Black family together to read and make a young Black girl, and especially a young Black boy feel reflected and seen in that book, then it honestly feels worth it.
@HerringAli I’ve done villain pov twice so far. One in a older fantasy romance project and the other an upcoming Jim Crow superhero novel. I never try to redeem my villains, especially the racist one. I do show their reasoning, but its always about showing the mc overcoming them in the end.
@Sarah_Nicolas I always imagine my books in my head as a movie! And I’ll even build scenes using different music I listen to. A lot of times I’ll take inspiration from actual movies too. My idea of having sea dragon riding mermaids in my latest book came from the whale riders in Black Panther.
@HerringAli Pretty much why I wrote Mask of Ivory which is how I imagine America would look after 40 years of republican maga dominated culture and policies lol. I only like writing dystopian if the characters can escape to a better place though. Love the quests for mythical paradise lands.
@LyndallCave@Sarah_Nicolas In an upcoming book I have this year some Black kids find an artifact under a former slave plantation that literally gives them dark powers. Their eyes turn jet-black whenever they use it. But if white people touch it, the power corrupts them, and their eyes go all milky. white.
@Sarah_Nicolas The whole ‘dark’ thing people do all the time in fiction is my similar pet-peeve! Evil dark lord, corrupt dark/black magic. Why are they evil? Cause they’re dark, obviously! It drives me up the wall. Never had a villain called the evil light lord or who uses corrupt white magic.
@Sarah_Nicolas I had an unhealthy obsession with his books growing up. Especially the book How I Learned To Fly. I was so angry that I couldn’t fly XD but finally found a way to make it happen in my own book at least.
