While impressive tech, the use case and potential benefits are not actually understood, only imagined.

Especially the question of just where are we on the S-curve of general knowledge? If we're near the top, arrogant as that may sound, then the potential unlock of value is relatively low and hence the massive investment, misunderstood and unwise.
