Al Di Meola — The Elegant Gypsy

When I was 15, I was equally captivated by two worlds of music: hard rock and jazz fusion. As much as I was mesmerized by the guitar playing of Michael Schenker, Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads, I was just as inspired by the brilliance of Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Al Di Meola.
Al’s albums Land of the Midnight Sun, Casino, Elegant Gypsy, and Electric Rendezvous were essential listening for me. His combination of incredible technique, sophisticated composition, and fearless musical exploration had a profound impact on my development as a musician.
I first became aware of Al when my cousin Van introduced me to Return to Forever’s Romantic Warrior. I was immediately blown away by his astonishing speed, flawless precision, and sophisticated musicality. As I prepared to attend Berklee College of Music, I had the opportunity to see the Return to Forever reunion tour in 1982. It was an eye-opening experience that left a lasting impression on me and further fueled my determination to pursue music at the highest level.
Fast-forward twenty years, and I was in Miami making my Black Utopia album, recording Yngwie Malmsteen on two tracks. I discovered that Al Di Meola was also living in Miami at the time, so I called Simon Phillips, who had played with Al over the years and was co-producing Black Utopia with me. I suggested that it would be incredible to have Al appear as a guest on the album alongside Yngwie. Simon reached out to Al, and before long, the session was set.
Al arrived at the studio and couldn’t have been more gracious. He brought his iconic black Les Paul along with an acoustic guitar. As I showed him the intricate unison line he would be doubling on “Sons of Anu,” he quietly transcribed the entire passage onto manuscript paper by hand. Moments later, he performed it flawlessly. It was a reminder that true virtuosity is built on preparation, discipline, and musicianship—not just raw technique.
Next came the solo exchanges with Mahavishnu Orchestra violin legend Jerry Goodman. Remarkably, nearly all of the solos were captured in the first or second take, creating an exciting spontaneity that perfectly suited the track.
We then moved on to the acoustic piece, “Gypsy Moth,” where Al contributed several tasteful creative ideas that we ultimately incorporated into the final arrangement. His instincts as both a guitarist and a musician elevated the composition in subtle but important ways.
I vividly remember sitting in the control room while Al recorded his parts, smiling from ear to ear. Here I was, watching one of my musical heroes bring my compositions to life. It remains one of the true highlights of my career.
To understand the significance of that moment, it’s important to look back at Al’s incredible journey.
Al Di Meola was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1954, and grew up in Bergenfield, New Jersey. He began playing guitar as a teenager and developed a passion for both rock and jazz. His dedication and discipline led him to receive a scholarship to Berklee College of Music.
While at Berklee, Al’s talent caught the attention of Chick Corea, who invited him to join Return to Forever in 1974, replacing guitarist Bill Connors. At only 19 years old, Al found himself performing alongside Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White. His arrival helped define the sound of jazz fusion during the 1970s.
Albums such as Where Have I Known You Before, No Mystery, and Romantic Warrior became landmark recordings. Al’s precise alternate picking, rhythmic accuracy, and unique melodic approach influenced an entire generation of guitarists.
During his Return to Forever years and early solo career, Al became closely associated with his famous black 1971 Gibson Les Paul Custom.
