The first Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, @DSkaith, says that recent years' devolution has created an opportunity for locally elected leaders to speak up for the challenges their areas face, including challenging government on rural needs and nature.
My first campaign was to help get @DSkaith elected as @YNYMayor
To hear that 3 million £1 bus journeys have been sold is such a great thing to hear.
Could not have campaigned for a better person to be @YNYMayor
🚨 NEW: Reform UK’s Makerfield by-election candidate Robert Kenyon previously claimed women “can’t drive” and get abortions for “vanity purposes” to “shag anyone they want”
He admitted: “I’m sexist, sorry but I am”
Fighting amongst ourselves doesn’t serve the country or our communities and it’s time to get on with the job at hand, growing our economy and improving living standards for the people who need a united Labour Party in government.
It’s been an interesting day to be in Westminster laying out the great opportunities York and North Yorkshire has to offer our country. I know the Prime Minister and government are committed to delivering for this country, my conversations today are testament to that.
Followed by Ian Flatt, who’s set the team off on leg 2!
Here he is with his wife Rachael and the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith @DSkaith

We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events at Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester, which have claimed two lives and left many more affected. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have been lost, and with the Jewish community in Manchester, here in York and North Yorkshire, and across the country.
This appalling act of violence has caused profound pain and fear, felt far beyond Manchester. At this most difficult of times, we want our Jewish community to know that you are not alone.
We stand in solidarity with Jewish residents, as we do with all communities across our region and reaffirm our commitment to doing everything we can to support you.
“I think we spend too much time talking about Reform.”
Labour need to spend more time talking about the problems the country is facing and how the government will respond to those challenges, rather than Reform, says @DSkaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire.
@KateEMcCann
I’m really proud to be backed by these mayors, who are delivering day in, day out for the people they represent.
As Deputy Leader, I’d speak up for every Labour member, nation & region from my seat at Cabinet.

Pleased to meet Kelly Becker, UK President of @SchneiderElec, & @DSkaith, Mayor of York & North Yorkshire, at the inauguration of the new Scarborough plant.
Together we visited this £40m site, which is creating 200 jobs and driving forward the UK's energy transition 🇫🇷🤝🇬🇧
Jim, you've been absolutely fundamental in sending power to the regions and closer to communities. I'm incredibly grateful for your support and commitment to York and North Yorkshire. Thank you @JimfromOldham
I’ve had a wonderful experience in my role as Minister of State delivering on fixing local government, driving devolution in England, and working for a boss like @AngelaRayner has been genuinely empowering and fulfilling, I’ll never forget the trust and confidence she placed in me.
Now it’s time for a fresh start.
Working people have been exploited and their efforts abused for too long. Quiet compliance and being asked to work to the grind and play by the rules without getting on in life has run its course. That is obvious.
The Labour government must recognise that all politics is family and community. For over a decade working people and their communities have been hammered and patience for change has run out. It’s a hard inheritance but the reality. If people don’t urgently feel the benefit in better living standards; safer, cleaner and decent neighbourhoods then it’s for nothing.
I wish everyone in @mhclg and wider local government the best for the future, you are all amazing and the country is lucky to have you.
