Building Caribbean Tourism in Full Color — leadership, reality and action 🇧🇿🌎
Tourism leaders from across the region came together for a powerful ministerial roundtable at #STC2026, delivering a clear message — the future of Caribbean tourism must be practical, people-centered and rooted in our unique strengths.
Moderated by preeminent Caribbean broadcaster and media manager Julian Rogers, the discussion featured:
Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism, Youth, Sports & Diaspora Relations, Belize (pictured bottom right)
Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, Belize (top right)
Assembly Member Zorisha Hackett, Secretary of Tourism, Antiquities and Creative Industries, Tobago House of Assembly (top left)
Valérie Damaseau, Commissioner of Tourism & Culture, Saint-Martin (top center)
🔹 From plans to action — Ministers emphasized that strategies alone are not enough. The region must move beyond “plans on a shelf” and focus on implementation that delivers real results.
🔹 People at the center — Tourism success depends on communities. From youth engagement to local ownership and cultural connection, the Caribbean’s greatest asset remains its people.
🔹 Culture as core infrastructure — Authentic cultural experiences are not add-ons — they are central to the tourism product and what differentiates the Caribbean globally.
🔹 Sustainability as a lived reality — From protected areas and reef systems to waste management and climate resilience, ministers stressed the need to balance growth with preservation.
🔹 One Caribbean approach — Collaboration, shared learning and regional integration are essential to unlocking the full potential of Caribbean tourism.
The takeaway was clear: sustainable tourism is not a concept — it is a daily commitment that must live in our policies, our communities and our actions.

Regenerative Tourism in Action: Practical Models for Coastal Communities 🌊🌱
At #STC2026, this session moved beyond theory to examine how Caribbean destinations are putting regenerative tourism into practice — with a clear focus on restoring ecosystems while centering people in the tourism system.
Featuring Zorisha Hackett, Secretary of Tourism, Antiquities and Creative Industries, Tobago (second from left); Javier Jacobs, Operations Manager, Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority; Kelly Fontenelle, CEO, St. Kitts Tourism Authority (right); and moderated by Dr. Sherma Roberts, Senior Lecturer in Tourism, The University of the West Indies.
The discussion highlighted an important evolution: from sustainability’s focus on preservation to regeneration’s emphasis on restoration and community-centered development.
🔹 Regenerative tourism shifts the focus from “profit and planet” to “people and planet” — placing communities at the center of tourism planning and benefits
🔹 The region can no longer rely on preservation alone — ecosystems that are already under stress must be actively restored and healed
🔹 Coastal and natural assets — from coral reefs and mangroves to rainforests — are critical to livelihoods and must be treated as living systems, not static resources
🔹 Community ownership is essential — from locally led tourism businesses to volunteer-driven conservation and decision-making structures
🔹 Education and awareness — starting from youth — are key to building long-term stewardship and sustained engagement
🔹 Partnerships and policy frameworks — including NGOs, private sector collaboration and targeted financing — are needed to scale impact
From coral reef restoration and ecosystem reserves to community-driven initiatives and policy innovation, the discussion reinforced a key point: regeneration is already underway across the Caribbean, but accelerating it will require stronger collaboration, financing and sustained action.
