An empty desk can only mean the end of another school year. Today I finish my 26th year as a teacher.
After more than a quarter century in the classroom, here are five things I’ve learned:
I'm available this weekend for conversations if you've just picked up that we are recruiting for a Principal at The Vale Academy, Bedfordshire. Deadline Monday. Lovely school, trust into disruption-free learning and no fads.

I confiscated this phone at the start of the day.
Compliant student- handed it over, no issues, I said I would return at the end of the day.
Do you know how many times it pinged/vibrated in my office?
Over 78 times.
Please don't tell me they are not a distraction.

Leaders: if you are still doing or planning a "mocksted" or mock inspection of any kind, you should not do that.
I get that ofsted anxiety is high and legitimate. Genuinely. But this isnt the way. It's totally toxic, and I 100% guarantee staff will not see it the way you do, however much you say "don't do anything differently" or "this isn't for ofsted, it's developmental."
Trust me. Other routes to school improvement are available.
Today we say a heartfelt farewell to Cathy Barr as she begins her next chapter.
Her dedication, leadership & commitment to our schools & communities have made a lasting impact.
We are incredibly grateful for all she has given & wish her every success for the future.
