Be the difference for THAT kid. THAT kid can’t read, falls asleep in class, forgets his homework, is always hungry, and says he hates school. THAT kid needs you the most. You can help change THAT kid's life trajectory.
Thanks for caring because I was THAT kid 40 years ago!
I’ve dedicated my life to help THAT kid!

When a young person is in a dysregulated state this is not the time for reasoning and questions. What happened?.Why did you do this?.You should have know better?.The highest part of the brain(Pre-frontal Cortex) thinking ,reasoning, decision making ,learning memory is offline.
Homework does little to improve achievement and can actually have negative effects, especially at elementary level. Recess however has many positive effects such as improved self regulation of emotions, improved interpersonal skills and focus! And should never be taken away.

I once expected students to sit quietly for a 40 min lesson. I got frustrated when they got fidgety. This lead to me yelling.
Then I found myself fidgety after only 20 minutes on a PD Day. Everything changed. I changed from “delivering curriculum” to “discovering curriculum.”
On one of my elementary report cards, there was a note from the teacher that read, “Bryan will not be college material”.
Let’s remember that we have the power to impact a student’s life trajectory (for better or worse). Choose BETTER!

We all know that kids in the school have “reputations.”
Well… the adults have reputations too. I hope to be known as the one who brings positive energy, the one who supports the staff, and the one who still loves the kids.
How are you known in the halls of your school?
Student behaviors may have less to do with seeking attention or work avoidance… it could be due to sleep deprivation, hunger or fear. Know the story and you can better know how to help!

I stopped giving detentions when I finally understood that behaviour is a form of communication. I was punishing the act, rather than trying to understand the root cause of it - and when I finally did, I was typically more sad than I was angry.
