The African Civet produces a waxy substance that is used in luxury natural perfumes. At full strength, the material smells repulsive, like fecal cheese, but at the proper dilution, it gives a powerful, musky, animalic sweetness to a perfume.
Roses are grown for rose absolute and rose otto, two of the most famous ingredients in natural perfumery. Rose absolute is solvent extracted, and rose otto is the steam distilled material from the rose blossoms.
Genuine deer musk is a fragrant,cholesterol-based substance from a specialized gland found on the male musk deer. It's expensive, but one of my favorite perfume ingredients.
