DNA brings lost Arctic Heroes home after 180 years 🧬

In the frozen wilderness of the Arctic, 105 desperate men from Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition dragged heavy boats across the ice in April 1848, hoping to reach safety.

None of them survived...

Now, after more than a century and a half of silence, science has given four of those forgotten sailors back their names.
Using DNA extracted from skeletal remains and matched with living descendants, researchers from the University of Waterloo have identified three crewmen from HMS Erebus and one from HMS Terror: Harry Peglar, Captain of the Foretop.

Peglar’s body was found in 1859 carrying his personal documents and the only written records ever recovered from the entire doomed expedition (now known as the “Peglar Papers”). Yet for 166 years, confusion over his clothing left his identity in doubt until DNA finally proved it was him.

The other newly identified sailors are:

William Orren, Able Seaman

David Young, Boy 1st Class

John Bridgens, Subordinate Officers’ Steward

All four had survived the brutal years trapped in ice before joining that final, fatal march.
These discoveries bring the total number of identified Franklin expedition members to just six; a heartbreakingly small number from a crew of 129 brave souls who never came home.

For their living descendants, this is more than history. It’s closure. One descendant, BBC journalist Rich Preston, discovered he is related to John Bridgens and described the news as “a huge surprise” and an incredibly personal connection to his own family story.

DNA isn’t just solving mysteries — it’s restoring humanity to one of the most tragic chapters in polar exploration.
