The Durban University of Technology is proud to celebrate Dr Eric Bakama from the Faculty of Management Sciences on being named a finalist for the prestigious 2026 Prof Paul Kruger Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Presented by the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering (SAIIE), the Prof Paul Kruger Award is one of South Africa's most respected honours in engineering education. It recognises academics who demonstrate exceptional commitment to teaching excellence, innovation in higher education and the development of future professionals.

Dr Bakama is among a select group of finalists representing universities across South Africa, reflecting the high standard of teaching and learning that continues to distinguish DUT's academic community. His recognition underscores the University's commitment to academic excellence and its ongoing efforts to prepare graduates who are innovative, adaptable and equipped to address the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.

The winners will be announced at the SAIIE Awards and Gala Dinner on Thursday, 13 August 2026, at the Wallenberg Conference Centre, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), in Stellenbosch, Western Cape.

The People and Operations Division recently hosted a two-day team-building session at Selborne Golf Estate Hotel and Spa, bringing together staff from across the division for a programme focused on collaboration, communication and teamwork.

Representatives from all units participated in a range of indoor and outdoor activities designed to strengthen working relationships, encourage cross-functional collaboration and build stronger connections across the division.

The session provided an opportunity for colleagues to engage, learn from one another and work together towards shared goals, reinforcing the importance of teamwork in creating a positive and productive work environment.

Congratulations to Professor Suren Singh, Executive Dean of the DUT Faculty of Applied Sciences, on an exceptional achievement.

Racing in his 13th Amashova Durban Classic, Professor Singh delivered a remarkable performance, completing the challenging 106km route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in an impressive time of 2:57:46.

In doing so, he shattered his previous personal best of 3:02:32, set in 2019, by almost five minutes. The result earned him 271st place overall and 10th place in his age category, marking an inspiring return to peak form following an injury in 2023.

Professor Singh's achievement is a testament to years of dedication, disciplined training and perseverance. Beyond his leadership as Executive Dean, he continues to inspire by demonstrating that excellence extends beyond the workplace and into every aspect of life.

The Durban University of Technology is proud to celebrate Professor Singh's outstanding accomplishment and his continued embodiment of the University's commitment to excellence.
