It would've been close taking it himself, but I think he could've made it. Flipping the ball to Ashby would've been okay if not for Tatis going on the pitch with the 3-2-2 situation, but in that situation it allowed him to score with Ashby going away from the plate.
Bauers made 3 mistakes on that play. He took himself away from 1st base to field the ball instead of letting a Platinum Glover make a routine play, then didn't take it himself, then flipped it to Ashby (who was losing the race to the bag) instead of pocketing it.
Both 1Bs, especially Vaughn, field too many balls to their right, & it's cost them more than a handful of outs. A regular 2B, let alone Turang, can make those plays easier. I saw Vladdy let Clement field one less than 20 ft off the line to finish their game tonight.

Brewers had man at 2nd w/0 outs in 4th, 5th, & 10th & w/1 out in 9th. Not only did they not score in any of those situations, the runner never advanced. Gary brought in the run to start the 11th, but didn't score from 3rd w/0 outs. That's not just RISP futility, but bad baseball.
Gary Sanchez opened the 11th with a RBI double and moved to third with nobody out.
He didn't score. Brewers lead, 3-2, but...that's the theme of the game: That Can't Happen.

Jake Bauers said if he could do the play in the 8th over, he would have just looked to third and thrown home.
"You know [Tatis] is going to be aggressive in that spot. It definitely flashed in my head as I was flipping the ball. It was just a fraction of a second too late."
Coming into today, without the 7 h2h games, the Brewers & Cubs have nearly identical remaining SOS of .50905 & .50896 in their other 35 games. The teams they play won't have a large effect on who wins the Central, but those h2h games sure will, & if either team gets hot or cold.
The Brewers do have a tough schedule remaining down the stretch, but the Cubs have a harder schedule remaining and the Brewers still have a 4 game lead
The Brewers and Cubs will also play 7 more times
Brewers control their own destiny
Watching this team, I don't understand how they're 5th in runs scored. Since the All Star break, they've scored 3 or fewer runs in regulation in 13 of 25 games, & 2 or fewer 8 times. Somehow they're 15-10, but that's a lot of pressure to be putting on the pitching/defense.
121 games into the season, this offense continues confound. The numbers — fifth in runs! — say it’s good. The eye test, well, not so much.

@ScoringChanges@Brewers@Padres The Brewers had a dropped back end of a double play last year as well on 6/27 against Colorado where Hoskins whiffed the catch more obviously than this & that wasn't given an error, so while I personally think this should be an error, I too don't expect a change.
@ScoringChanges@Brewers@Padres Bae definitely didn't need to fully stretch for the throw to beat the runner, and while the throw was quite low, it looked from a better replay on the broadcast last night like he didn't need to stretch that far to keep the ball from hitting the dirt.
Good for him. I was hoping the Brewers were going to give him a chance earlier this year with him tearing up AAA & how bad the left side of the infield was offensively. He definitely deserved the opportunities that Greg Jones completely wasted.
Dominican infielder Eddys Leonard has been promoted by the San Francisco Giants, per sources.
Leonard, 25, originally signed with the Dodgers in 2017 and spent nearly a decade working his way through the minor leagues before earning his MLB promotion today.
Considering the rumors of what it was going to take to land Skubal, it's amazing that this is all the Tigers got. It certainly makes all of the ridiculously stacked packages that were being floated for the Brewers to get him look even more laughable then they already were.
There's no reason for Hamilton to be playing even half as much as Ortiz right now, let alone more. The only thing that's likely to do is stunt Joey's offensive momentum he's had since Pratt's promotion.
After hitting cleanup for two starts, Christian Yelich will bat third in the order tonight.
Joey Ortiz has been in just 3 of 7 starting lineups since David Hamilton returned from injury. Hamilton gets the start at 3B again tonight.
That would be extremely dumb. Henderson & Skubal have been basically the same pitcher this year, but one has 5 or 6 years of control left, while the other only has 8 weeks at a cost of $10 million. A 1-for-1 trade of those 2 would be dumb, adding anyone else would be insane.
I'd be really surprised if they trade Fischer. Peña has too many health questions for teams to take a chance on him. Henderson actually has a higher ERA+ than Skubal so far this year, has 5 or 6 years of control left compared to 2 months, & trading a top 3 SP doesn't help them.
Almost all of the trades I've seen from baseball media, even the "experts", have been ridiculously one-sided, but this one tops them all. 3 of their top 4 prospects is way too much, especially with 2 having success in the Majors already. Ashby as well? How was this guy ever a GM?
What will it take to get a two-time Cy Young Winner to Milwaukee?
@StevePhillipsGM builds his trade to send #Tigers ace Tarik Skubal to the #Brewers 🍻

I don't understand this. Paying $2.5 mil (plus a player) for just a flyer on a player who's been bad at MLB level & will likely be at least 28 before ever potentially appearing for the big club seems like a lot, & takes away from the money they could spend on an actual upgrade.
@Dom_Cotroneo I'd have to imagine that they came to some type of agreement to put him through the pitching lab (assuming he goes unclaimed)? Otherwise, that's a fairly expensive flyer for this franchise on Gordon.
@CyrtHogg The four walks by McCullers sure weren't great, but he would've finished the game with only one of the two in the ninth and no runs had it not been for Bauers throwing a ball info left field.
What was Josh Bell doing? Went back to 2nd (but not all the way to tag), then wandered off third & didn't get back, then didn't try to get into a rundown.
Batter also needs to pay attention to the runners in front of him.
