This past week, on a test bed in Britain, a Rolls-Royce jet engine ran at full take-off power on pure hydrogen, putting out water vapour instead of carbon.
Nobody on Earth had managed it before. It is the sort of thing that ought to stop the country in its tracks, and it will be forgotten by the weekend.
Leave aside the recent paroxysms of renewed net-zero insanity from Derelict Ed and the pervasive atmosphere of offended envy that greets much homegrown achievement nowadays in Britain. This engineering is a wonder, and it's British to the bone.
We gave the world the jet engine in the first place - Frank Whittle, a Coventry man and an RAF officer, patented it in 1930 while the Air Ministry assured him it was a curiosity. Rolls-Royce is today one of perhaps three firms anywhere that can build a large aero engine at the outer edge of the possible, and it has just done what most of the industry swore was twenty years away.
As usual, you marvel at how little the people who govern us had to do with it. The engineers in Derby are world-class; the stewardship above them is third-rate. They pulled off a global first while paying the most expensive industrial electricity in the developed world to keep the power on over the bench - a weight no German, American or Gulf rival has to carry. We produce frontier brilliance on the shop floor and fritter it away at the despatch box, and we have done for two generations.
That is the maddening shape of modern Britain: brilliance from below, sub- (or, indeed, ultra-) mediocrity from above. The people here who actually make things are still among the best in the world; the state that is meant to back them treats a firm like Rolls-Royce as a photocall today and a takeover target tomorrow, and prices its energy as though it would prefer the next plant were built in Texas.
Progress starts from the other end. Give these people what every rival government gives its champions and we beg ours to do without: the cheap, abundant power their competitors already enjoy, a supply chain built around them, and a state that guards a national asset rather than auctioning it. The hard part of a British revival - the talent, the nerve, the engineering - is already done, and was done again this week, by people who deserve a far better country than the one currently sitting above them.
We just taught an engine to breathe fire and exhale water. The least we owe the men and women who managed it is a government and a state as brilliant as they are.

@ErfinderRotwang itโs hard to know who or what to believe and didnโt particularly believe this guy but a quick google search confirms this. My question is why are the USA not part of the global pricing that we seem to be.
๐จMiliband misled the Commons again.
US gas prices are some 80% cheaper than the UK's because they produce & consume gas domestically!
When will the Government grant North Sea licences at Rosebank, Jackdaw and elsewhere to increase domestic supply and bring down our bills?
To be soft on crime is to betray the law-abiding citizen. And to make excuses for the criminal is to offer incentives to dishonesty and violence. Crime flourishes in a culture of excuses.
We Conservatives know, even if many sociologists don't, that crime is not a sickness to be curedโit is a temptation to be resisted, a threat to be deterred, and an evil to be punished.

Why is it so rare to hear people say theyโre proud of Keir Starmer?
The UK economy is showing clear signs of stabilisation under Labour, yet praise remains quiet.
Is it classic British cynicism? Or are we simply not used to a Prime Minister who focuses on the day job instead of chasing headlines?๐ฌ๐ง
@ErfinderRotwang Lots of people saying it would be cheaper. Could it be something to do with supply and demand perhaps. If we produce our own and supply increases then it would drive the global price down ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ. Oil rich nations always stop producing as much when prices are lower to drive up prices
Translation: whatโs this politician doing speaking common sense and telling the general public the truth. This simply wonโt do. Must ring kier to send the social media police round and silence her immediately ๐
This is the reason her party hasnโt recovered in polls.
She knows the rise is largely due to the Iran war and wholesale costs; so do the public of course, and the market.
And yet she persists in this puerile partisan gesture. Sleepwalking into irrelevance.
@ErfinderRotwang Probably more expensive than the cost of producing ourselves. Just quoting what keeps being reported. Itโs also reported staff from Aberdeen who have lost jobs in the industry now fly to Norway so thereโs also the environmental impact there not to mention lost tax revenue
@ErfinderRotwang Is it common sense both from an environmental point of view in terms of transportation and an economic standpoint to buy oil and gas from Norway at reportedly twice the price. ?
๐จ BLAIR BOMBSHELL: SCRAP NET ZERO NOW! โTHEREโS NO LOGIC TO IT!โ ๐ฅ
Tony Blair Demands Starmer Scrap Milibands Mad Expensive Green Agenda Immediatelyโผ๏ธ
Blair has just shredded mad Miliband and the entire net zero agenda. Thereโs zero logic to it!
Asked directly for total clarity: โFor total clarity, are you advising Keir Starmer to rip up Ed Milibands green energy targets?โ
Blair bluntly replied: โYes I am!โ
He explained that the 3 biggest emitters in the world today are China, America and India. Together they โaccount for just over 50% of global emissions.โ
All are pursuing cheap energy. They still do renewable energy. โChina for example builds more renewable energy than the rest of the world put together.โ โIt just means that the lens from which they judge policy is cheap energy.โ
He rightly points out Britainโs emissions are โunder 1% of global emissionsโ so we canโt solve climate change.
And says he โdoesnt understand the logic behindโ imposing costs on businesses and consumers to pursue net zero when the rest of the world is not doing so.
He says again he doesnt understand why weโre shutting down North Sea oil and gas industry in circumstances where no other country in the world is doing that if โtheyโve still got a requirement to import energy from oil and gasโ.
It costs way too much and โis not the right priority!โ
Net zero is not saving the planet. It is economic self-harm. Blair has just blown the entire agenda apart.
No wonder we are disenchanted with all current politicians. Does he seriously think if he comes on social media and slags another politician off, that we will want to vote for him ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ. Does the lack of them telling us what they would do differently suggest they donโt have a clue
While Farage pockets millions as a "reward" for Brexit, the rest of us are left with soaring energy bills, political chaos and a broken economy.
He only cares about himself and his wealthy donors. It is up to all of us to make sure he never becomes prime minister.
