One of the greatest heroes on D-Day, of course, was Lt. Col. James E. Rudder, commander of the 2nd Ranger Battalion in the invasion. Said General Omar Bradley, “No soldier in my command has ever been wished a more difficult task than that which befell the 34-year-old commander of this Provisional Ranger Force. Lieutenant Colonel James E. Rudder, a rancher from Brady, Texas, was to take a force of 200 men, land on a shingled shelf under the face of a 100-foot cliff, scale the cliff, and there destroy an enemy battery of coastal guns.”
Rudder was from Eden, Texas. I've told his story here, of course, but every year on this date I try to fill out a little more of his story. One of my favorite Rudder facts is that, when he first went to college at Tarleton State University, in 1927, he didn't quite have enough for tuition and room and board, so the Tarleton football coach, W.J. Wisdom, arranged to award him a partial "milk cow scholarship." The Lions Club donated a 2-year-old Jersey heifer, which Rudder milked daily in exchange for reduced prices for his meals in Tarleton's dining halls.
Shown here: Ten Army Rangers received the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry during the seizure of Pointe du Hoc on D-Day. Eight of the recipients are pictured in this photo, including Lieutenant Colonel James E. Rudder, who is standing at far left. I have such incredible respect for these men. To do what they did takes more courage that, to me, seems more than humanly possible.
Congrats Barbers Hill Varsity Boys Track & Field team on another district championship! What an awesome performance!
