@SuperWiki Look at his trajectory after that ...he was so unnerved by loosing Sam that in S9 he literally lied and tricked Sam into being possessed and when Sam came to know....the end result was Mark of Cain. How could he have survived? He would have drowned in grief.

Just musing: Jensen has said that it made sense for Dean to be the one to die bc "Sam could carry on without his brother, but Dean could not." But we saw in Season 6 that Dean could. And by S15 Dean had a much better support network. And a dog.
