SKALE was always the odd duck amongst L2s and at some point we were even "removed" from the category through some effective position efforts by the rollup insiders.
Our position was that "L2" rollup architecture was really enterprise software in disguise... ie a centralized rent taking server running Ethereum promising decentralization through finalizing transactions on mainnet. There were also grand plans of creating decentralized sequencers that would make the L2 more like a blockchain that never came to fruition.
We felt that decentralization could not be compromised and having a family of pooled security blockchains all controlled by the parent blockchain with integrated value capture back to ETH was a better way of scaling Ethereum - ie SKALE.
Our prediction that rollups would be very financially successful but at the expense of Ethereum's decentralization and value capture was seen as sacrilegious at the time and we were even called competitors to Ethereum by the rollup maxis. That controversial view now seems to now be a common take. In 2018/2019 when this was the hottest topic of the time, group think clearly won over contrarian perspectives.
I'm glad to now see Vitalik make a strong statement like this... "L2s and their role in Ethereum no longer makes sense, and we need a new path." It isn't easy to change strategic direction but it is the bold move that is needed.
I don't think this is the death of all L2s but it will be a consolidation around a few winners that will in many ways compete with Ethereum. There will also be a re-thinking of L2s as trust required centralized blockchain technology. Ecosystems like Base are thriving and will continue to grow. SKALE has even deployed SKALE manager into Base and now has a SKALE on Base chain. SKALE builders like what they are doing and will continue to put a lot of effort into growing that ecosystem.
In general I think this is a big step forward for the Ethereum and Ethereum scalers that are built different.
But as the "Scaling Wars" end, the "Compute Wars" begin.
The past is the past. What matters now is which chains can support the AI market. Blockchain and AI are built for each other—programmable money meets programmable intelligence. This is a reset. The old moats are neutered when you are neutered in a market for AI agents that need zero-gas fees, predictable fee structures, privacy, performance, and compute.
Payment protocols succeed when they integrate with the real world.

Quality. Quality. Quality. That is what will matter in the next wave
Ecosystems that gather the highest quality apps, users, and partners will win
This is our mission and directive at SKALE. We are fortunate to be working with so many world class, top quality builders 🙏
