The young man in the middle is my son. And not once have I ever questioned the color of the boys he calls his friends. I care about one thing: HOW THEY TREAT HIM.

These boys have laughed together, fished together, looked out for each other, and made memories they’ll never forget.

They don’t define each other by race—they define each other by loyalty, respect, and friendship.

The amount of hate I’ve seen over Black and White kids simply being friends has been heartbreaking.

As a mom, I’ll never understand why anyone would want to tear apart genuine friendships because of the color of someone’s skin.

I’m thankful my son has friends who accept him, encourage him, and enjoy life with him. That’s what matters. The recent tragedy has reminded us all how precious life is.

Instead of teaching our children who they shouldn’t be friends with, maybe we should be teaching them to love harder, stand up for one another, and see people for who they are.

I’m proud of my son. I’m proud of the young men standing beside him. And I pray they continue to be the kind of generation that breaks down walls instead of building them.
