What we needed today was a President who evoked compassion for families, mourning for the lives lost, and a unified commitment to the safety of travelers.

Instead, what we experienced was a divisive, insensitive message, which lacked any factual basis for casting blame on DEI.

The message evoked racism, discrimination, and continued misunderstanding of the intent of initiatives that did not dismiss merit and excellence, but ensured that merit and excellence were not dismissed in non-white, non-male, non-heterosexual, differently-abled people.

We have a choice, America.

We can educate and elevate ourselves beyond this.

In doing so, we must cultivate and expect leadership that promotes dignity and creates an atmosphere for building the Beloved Community.

Statement on behalf of the Family of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Today, our family has learned that President Trump has ordered the declassification of the remaining records pertaining to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy, and our father, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

For us, the assassination of our father is a deeply personal family loss that we have endured over the last 56 years. We hope to be provided the opportunity to review the files as a family prior to its public release.”

I want to say to all of the Charlies of the world who are erroneously, yet “declaratively,” conveying that my father’s influence and the way he is honored are unwarranted:

I’m clear on why you do it.

It’s the same reason now that it was then.

It’s the reason that led the government to assassinate him.

It’s a desire to make the ideology of white supremacy, inclusive of economic disparity and militarism to protect unrighteousness empire, a consistent and persistent implementation.

Daddy stood against that, envisioned the eradication of racism, militarism and poverty, and was working on his vision becoming a reality.

The work continues…we won’t stop.

Don’t act like everyone loved my father. He was assassinated. A 1967 poll reflected that he was one of the most hated men in America. Most hated. Many who quote him now and evoke him to deter justice today would likely hate, and may already hate, the authentic King. #MLK.

Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.”
