Yasin Malik’s men didn’t stop at raping the 27-year-old Kashmiri Hindu nurse Sarla Bhatt. They then murdered her, engraved the acronym ‘JKLF’ on her body, and mutilated it out of sheer contempt for her Hindu identity. After that, they issued multiple warnings to her family against cremating her remains according to Hindu rituals. The family still went ahead with the cremation, defying the threats. When they went to collect her cremated remains (asthi) later, a mob of around 200 Islamists descended upon the crematorium and stomped over them.

They didn’t stop even at that. They then bombed her family home with a grenade.

Do you really think all 200 of those monsters who showed up at the crematorium were foreign infiltrators, Pakistani terrorists, or JKLF members? These are the questions that make many Kashmiri Muslims very uncomfortable. The moment you raise these issues, especially when they present a narrative portraying their community as victims, they label you an Islamophobe or resort to similar accusations.

I have seen all kinds of Islamists, but the tribe in Kashmir is the craftiest. Many of them pretend to be atheists in private, yet their public behaviour and political leanings tell a completely different story. Very hard to take their words at face value.

As an Indian who has lived through decades of our country bleeding from Islamic terrorism - Pahalgam, Pulwama, 26/11 Mumbai, the endless pain in Kashmir, the targeted killings of our soldiers and civilians, this film hits differently.

We know what it feels like when ideology from a “holy book” is twisted to justify the slaughter of innocents. We know the frustration when the system fails to protect its own people. *Citizen Vigilante* is not just another action movie. It is the Western expansion of what *Dhurandhar* did for Indian audiences: a direct confrontation with the reality of imported (or home-grown) radicalism and the collapse of rule of law when ideology clashes with civilization.

Directed and written by Uwe Boll (known for low-budget, no-holds-barred films), starring Armie Hammer as Michael Sanders, the film runs a tight 89 minutes. It was released on June 19, 2026, and immediately became one of the most controversial releases in recent memory.

Her name was Shubha Shankaranarayan.

She was 21 years old, a law student in Bengaluru. She was in a relationship with Arun Varma, her 19 year old college junior. Her father did not approve and arranged her engagement to someone else.

On November 30, 2003, Shubha got engaged to B.V. Girish, a 27 year old software engineer. His family celebrated. His future seemed set.

Three days later, Shubha called Girish and suggested they spend some time together before the wedding. She proposed dinner and then a stop near HAL Airport to watch planes take off from the viewpoint on Inner Ring Road. He agreed.

While Girish stood looking at the runway, three men attacked him from behind with a motorcycle shock absorber. Shubha stood nearby and screamed at the attackers to stop, pretending to be shocked.

Girish suffered severe head injuries. He died in hospital the next morning.

His family filed a police complaint. At first, investigators found nothing. Girish had no enemies, and suspicion did not fall on Shubha because the engagement had happened just days earlier.

Then police reviewed the engagement video. Shubha appeared unhappy and disinterested throughout. Her expressions did not match someone who had just gotten engaged.

Investigators dug deeper. They discovered that Shubha had made 73 phone calls and exchanged numerous messages with Arun Varma on the day of the murder.

When confronted with the evidence, she confessed.

The murder had been planned even before the engagement. Shubha wanted to be with Arun Varma, so she, Arun, and two hired men planned to kill Girish.

Girish had been engaged for just three days.

In July 2010, all four were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Karnataka High Court later upheld the verdict. In 2025, the Supreme Court also upheld all four life sentences.

The Supreme Court observed:
"Shubha chose a tragic and unacceptable route to address her personal issues, which led to the loss of a young and innocent life."

He went to watch planes take off with his fiancee.

He never came home.
