Thai PM Orders Termination of Italian-Thai Contracts After Back-to-Back Crane Collapses

The government has ordered the termination of two construction contracts awarded to Italian-Thai Development Plc (ITD) following back-to-back crane collapse incidents that killed and injured multiple people, Acting Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.

Speaking after an emergency meeting at Government House, Anutin said the Ministry of Transport had been instructed to cancel ITD’s contracts for projects linked to a high-speed rail construction accident in Sikhio District, Nakhon Ratchasima, and an elevated expressway project on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon. Authorities were also told to pursue all legal action and begin the process of blacklisting the contractor.

Anutin said the incidents posed an unacceptable risk to public safety and were unprecedented, noting that two similar accidents had occurred on consecutive days involving the same contractor. He also addressed criticism over the State Railway of Thailand’s role in the Sikhio accident, saying SRT must take responsibility as a public transport operator because the victims were passengers, while separately seeking damages from the contractor under the terms of the contract.

The prime minister questioned why earlier projects involving the same contractor, including the State Audit Office building, had not resulted in contract termination or blacklisting despite previous fatal incidents, and warned against agencies shifting responsibility.
