DISCORD USERS BE WARNED

Earlier today, I encountered something that stopped me in my tracks: a macOS pop-up from Discord requesting permission to “receive keystrokes from any application.”

At first glance, this is alarming. Keystroke access means full visibility into everything you type: passwords, seed phrases, messages, and sensitive information. For a chat application, this kind of system-level privilege immediately raises questions.

After looking into it, I discovered that the request is technically related to Discord’s push-to-talk feature. macOS classifies global keyboard shortcuts as “Input Monitoring,” which requires the app to read keyboard input across the system. In other words, Discord needs that permission to detect when you press your assigned push-to-talk key, even if the app isn’t in focus.

While this explanation makes sense from a technical perspective, the implications remain concerning. Granting Input Monitoring effectively gives the application full keystroke access. Even if Discord itself is legitimate, such a broad permission creates an unnecessary security surface particularly for users handling sensitive data or managing crypto wallets.

If Discord, or any application, were ever compromised, this permission could be exploited to capture login credentials or wallet keys. And for users who install modified clients such as BetterDiscord, the risk is even greater, since these unofficial builds bypass Discord’s normal security model.

For anyone who values privacy and security especially those in crypto, fintech, or security-conscious fields my recommendation is simple:

• Deny the keystroke access request.
• Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring and ensure Discord is unchecked.
• Reinstall Discord from the official website if you’ve ever installed third-party modifications.

Push-to-talk will still function when Discord is the active window, and you can easily substitute voice activation or a hardware mute button for global shortcuts.

The minor inconvenience is a small price to pay for maintaining system integrity, always ask: What exactly does this app need, and why?

Security isn’t a feature you enable once it’s a mindset you maintain.
