A makeup artist applied a realistic-looking facial scar using theater makeup, and participants viewed it in a mirror to confirm its presence. However, under the pretext of applying moisturizer to prevent cracking, the experimenter secretly removed the scar completely before the interaction began—leaving participants unaware that their face now appeared normal.
