"Go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb! That's how Team Gurren rolls!"
@ChudThomist To delight in the suffering of others is inherently unholy; this is complete nonsense.
There is a love of justice, which is one thing, but it does not stem from the suffering of others.
@darwintojesus Life started making a lot more sense when you realize that the main thing keeping people away from the church is idolatry of the self.
Pride is the deadliest of sins for a reason.
@darwintojesus It's sad, but I agree. Before my Catholicism conversion, I was pro-choice.
Life has no inherent value without God. From a purely utilitarian, pragmatic perspective, it makes sense to be pro-choice.
That's why this debate will never end. The tiebreaker will always be God.
@BreTweetz Personally speaking, I would explore Catholicism, and I find using an AI like grok to be a very good tool for any questions you might have.
But coming to Christ in any form is a great step and I'm proud of you.
@TaylorRMarshall Wasn't there another Pope named Leo about 150~ years ago that said the Catholic church would come under attack for the next 100 years or so?
Seems like that tracks.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist It can have existed in "seed" form and then be developed on, yes, both written and unwritten. That's what I'm getting at.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist It's just developing doctrine and church practices. In the early years, oral tradition was also huge. I see nothing weird about it, but this is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things anyway.
I'm not sure your beliefs at large, but I hope you open your heart one day.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist Not particularly, no. Even then, this is so far disconnected from this original argument that I don't care in the first place
It's simply not idolatry, and I believe in the church's teachings. I was against a lot of it initially, but feel a lot better studying with an open mind
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist I'm comfortable with that, yeah. I don't subscribe to the idea that these traditions weren't present in the early church. My understanding is that even though these weren't written down, they were present, and that was the church's response to the criticisms.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist No, because I believe in developing doctrine.
It's weirder to me that a church would randomly, abruptly stop developing itself than for it to take on a new practice after hundreds or thousands of years.
I believe the holy spirit protects us from permanently incorrect doctrine.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist I think sola scripture is nonsense, sorry. I believe in the one true church.
I see nothing wrong with asking a saint to pray for you. It's simply not idolatry by definition, as it's all behavior that points towards God.
Everything we do is oriented towards Him, including this.
@ZeekArkham As a catholic, the catholic church makes this important distinction. Honoring your parents is important, but not when it's fundamentally bad for you in the long term.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist It's understandable because I used to be non-denominational.
Even avid pro-protestant voices like redeemed zoomer say it's not idolotry. It just goes to show how many people either lack critical thinking or don't care to learn their own religion.
@BenRobe72598324@DF_UniatePapist Oooooooooh this is a big difference yeah, good catch
I can no longer understand how the protestant idea that veneration of your fellow man/woman is idolatry. It just seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of what idolatry is.
