Arsenal should adopt Spain's pattern of breaking down low-block teams

Watching the first half against Cape Verde, I noticed a recurring pattern. Spain's midfielders were constantly looking for the runs being made behind the defensive line, especially from Cucurella. Instead of endlessly recycling possession around the box, they were actively trying to find that one run that catches the defence sleeping.

It immediately made me think of Gabriel Martinelli.

One of Martinelli's biggest strengths is his movement in behind. He makes those runs repeatedly, but too often they go unnoticed. We see him darting into space, stretching the backline, only for the ball to go sideways or backwards. The run is there, the pass rarely comes.

Arteta already has the perfect profile to replicate this pattern. If our midfielders start recognising and executing those passes earlier, Martinelli could become one of the most dangerous weapons against low blocks. Defenders hate runners they can't track, and Martinelli thrives in those situations.

For years we've struggled against teams that sit deep and defend their box with 10 men. Maybe the solution isn't always another playmaker or another winger. Maybe it's simply becoming more aggressive and intentional in finding those runs behind the defence.

Spain showed a blueprint. Arsenal already have the players to make it work.
