I used to think being a good dad meant just showing up.

Being at the dinner table. Making it to the game. Saying “I love you” at bedtime.

I was there, but not really.

I’d be holding my phone at the table.
Thinking about work at the game.
Zoning out while tucking them in.

I called it “being present.” But really, I was coasting on autopilot.

One night, my son asked me, “Dad, are you listening?”

And the truth was, I wasn’t.

That question haunted me.

Not because I didn’t have an answer.
But because I did.

I had become the kind of dad I swore I wouldn’t be,

distracted
reactive
tired
spiritually dry.

I was drifting through fatherhood, hoping “being around” was enough.

But it wasn’t.

So I made a decision:
No more autopilot.

I started waking up early to pray and think. I began apologizing when I messed up.

I built small rhythms of connection, at meals, in the car, before bed.

And I committed to leading with intention, not just showing up out of habit.

Now I’m on a mission to help 10,000 other dads do the same.

Not to be perfect.
But to be present.
To lead with purpose.
And to anchor their homes in faith.

Because we don’t need more passive fathers.
We need awake ones. Engaged ones.

Fathers who model love, not just talk about it.

The world handed me a brick.
Jesus offered bread.

I spent years carrying what I thought was responsibility.
Turns out, it was just weight.

Here's what I learned about the difference:

Bricks:

• Demand more output
• Measure your worth by productivity
• Say "prove yourself daily"
• Get heavier the longer you carry them
• Build empires that don't care if you live or die

Bread:

• Offers rest for the weary
• Declares "you already belong"
• Says "come as you are"
• Nourishes instead of crushing
• Builds a kingdom where love defines worth

Here's the moment most dads realize they're living under Pharaoh's quota instead of Jesus' invitation:

When you're so busy building someone else's empire that you're crushing your own kingdom.

When your kids see you stressed, not blessed.
When your family gets your leftovers, not your best.
When you're physically present but emotionally absent.

That's the brick-carrying life.

The Israelites weren't freed to make different bricks.
They were freed to become different people.

People who rest.
People who worship.

People who belong, not because of what they produce, but because of whose they are.

Here's the invitation:

Stop carrying what Jesus never asked you to pick up.

That pressure to be perfect?
That need to prove yourself?
That weight of others' expectations?

Lay it down.

Pharaoh says: "Make more bricks."
Jesus says: "Take this bread."

One weighs you down.
The other fills you up.

One demands more.
The other offers rest.

One says "prove yourself."
The other says "you already belong."

The question that changed everything for me:

What brick am I still carrying that Jesus never asked me to pick up?

Write it down.
Set it at the foot of the cross.
Hear Jesus say: "You don't have to carry that anymore."

Because here's the truth:

Your worth isn't measured by your output.
Your identity isn't built on applause.
Your place at the table was secured before you did a single thing to earn it.

The world hands you a brick.
Jesus hands you bread.

Drop the brick. Take the bread.

Your family needs a dad who's nourished, not crushed.
Your kids need a father who rests, not one who strives.
Your legacy needs a man who belongs, not one who's still trying to prove he does.

From burnout to belonging.
From bricks to bread.
From proving to receiving.

Most men are trapped in an endless game of "better than."

• Better car.
• Better job.
• Better kids' achievements.
• Better spiritual reputation.

We're all climbing the same exhausting ladder.

But Jesus walked onto the scoreboard of human status...

And tore it down.

"The first will be last."
"Blessed are the poor in spirit."
"Unless you become like children."

Every value the world taught us to chase, He flipped upside down.

The tax collectors and prostitutes got front-row seats at His table.

The religious VIPs?

They stood outside, confused why their résumés didn't matter.

Here's what I'm learning as a dad:

My kids don't need a father who wins every status game.
↳ They need a father who's free from the game entirely.

They don't need me to be better than other dads.
↳ They need me to be beloved by the Father.

The moment you stop trying to be impressive and start trying to be present, everything changes.

Stop climbing.
Start kneeling.

The view is better from there.

Yeah, 100% fair. I’ve never understood why Dallas waits until guys are at max leverage either, makes the contracts way uglier.

Where I land is more on roster philosophy: if you’ve already tied up massive money in QB + WR1, can you really build a roster if your EDGE is also eating $45–50M a year? At some point, you’re betting 3 guys can carry the whole thing.

And sure, you can win with “the triplets” model (Aikman, Irvin, Smith). But even those teams had Charles Haley, Larry Allen, Stepnoski, Woodson, etc

I'll be honest. Last night was tough.

Week 2 of school = everyone's running on fumes.

I'm making dinner when I hear:
THWACK....crying.

Walk into pure chaos:

• "He called me names!"
• " She hit me!"
• Doors slamming, tempers flaring.

I'm thinking: Great. Father of the Year award right here.

But this IS the work.

Dinner table = first reset. We gathered, talked, laughed, prayed. Thought we were golden.

Kids remembered they were mad.
Round 2 began.

Bedtime prayers = second reset.
Another breath. Another chance.

Being a dad means sitting in the mess WITH them.

I am a mess most days.
So I can absolutely handle their mess too.

The rhythms saved us: sacred dinner table, Bedtime blessings, consistent resets.

Even on tough nights...
I wouldn't trade this chaos for anything.
