Dear President Mnangagwa @edmnangagwa
Just in case you are not aware, I would like to bring this to your attention. This is the state of the iconic Birchenough Bridge today.
Bridges, Mr. President, require regular inspection, maintenance and repair. When steel components begin to deteriorate, corrode or crack, they must be professionally assessed and, where necessary, repaired or replaced.
As this photograph clearly shows, there is a substantial visible crack at one of the steel connections, accompanied by corrosion.
Whatever its structural significance ultimately proves to be, deterioration of this nature on a bridge carrying people and vehicles should trigger an urgent inspection by qualified bridge engineers.
This bridge was built in 1936, Mr. President, and it was maintained throughout the colonial era. Look at the state it is in today. This is not merely about appearance; it is about public safety and the responsibility of government to maintain critical national infrastructure.
I am bringing this to your attention publicly, Mr. President, so that if this bridge eventually collapses or a tragedy occurs because of its deteriorating condition, you and your colleagues in government will not be able to say that you did not know.
You have been warned. The condition of the bridge is there for everyone to see. Maintaining infrastructure is cheaper than rebuilding it after a disaster, and certainly cheaper than the loss of human life that can result from neglect.
