Open letter to graduates with lower grades,
1. Having lower grades can be so frustrating especially during job hunting but is not a death sentence or a reason to assume one can not make it in life. There are many people who have joined the best of places with lower grades and many more who are super successful. Read:
REMEDY IT
2. Most big name employers require higher grades (2:1 and above) not because those with lower can not perform or deliver on the job but because it’s easier to filter candidates during recruitment process through such criteria especially while managing recruitment resources. The best way to remedy your lower grades is by enrolling in advanced degree as majority accept lower degrees with masters. Advanced degrees give candidates added advantage in job hunting especially those with lower grades. But be conscious of time (age).
SKILL UP
3. With the recent trend by KPMG and EY of accepting second-class lower (2:2), it’s clear that skills are the next big gate pass to big name organizations after looking past the age and grade requirements. It will be of great importance for lower grade degree holders to take skills and certifications very seriously. Aim to obtain all professional certificates obtainable in your profession and fortify it with as much relevant skills as possible. This will give you an edge over your contemporaries during job search and make you more attractive to employers in times of special need.
VOLUNTEER
4. Sometimes all you need is some 2 or 3 years experience to start applying for Experience Hire roles and your grade is deterring you from having even your first paying job. Look around for organizations in your close proximity that can take you even as volunteer or as an intern to gain hands on experience. Try and look for organizations that are relevant to your background and also in close proximity to save cost especially if you will not get paid. Use the opportunity to learn some work and also prove yourself on the job. I know a lot of people that got recommendations and landed their dream jobs through this methods.
START SMALL
5. Life is step by step. You want to join IOCs, Big4 or FUGAZ Banks doesn’t mean you must join them as Graduate or through GT programs that always limit you through your lower grade. Apply for smaller oil serving companies, smaller and upcoming accounting firms and new generation banks that dont normally demand much for GT programs and start from somewhere. Your dedication and value addition will surely pave way for you on the job and that will also give you the necessary skills and experience to move around the industry until you reach your dreamland. Some people started banking for 30 years before reaching a tier one bank nd this will come with more contacts, different experiences and perspectives that can even make you more relevant in the big organizations.
ACT LIKE A DROP OUT
6. Sometimes all the above may not work. The good thing is to “Act like a drop out” and hustle like you have never gone to school. Take that pride of “education” out of your head and get dirty. In the course of your struggle, unimaginable things happen. This can even involve hard labour or menial skills. I know a degree holder (with pass degree) that started working as labourer in my former company and after like 6 months he was noticed through his team. And upon interview, he was absorbed as senior staff and promoted to a supervisor. His degree did not play any role. It was that months of experience and understanding of the company’s system that got him the job.
KEEP PRAYING
7. Because the world, including our lives have been programmed and is under spiritual control of Allah, we need to constantly keep praying for grace and luck because you can try all the above and still fail to succeed if grace or luck are not on your side. But put in mind that grace and luck mostly come after hard work. That’s God’s tradition, He favors who are hard working and particular.
