A 35-year-old labour law attorney from Krugersdorp, Chinette Gallichan, was shot and killed at close range on Monday morning, 23 March 2026, outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration offices at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in Johannesburg’s central business district.

Gallichan had just arrived for a scheduled labour dispute hearing when a male suspect approached her as she exited her vehicle and opened fire. The attacker then fled on foot before escaping in a waiting getaway vehicle. Nothing was stolen from the scene.

At the time of her death, Gallichan was practising in the labour litigation department of mining company Sibanye-Stillwater. She was representing the company in an ongoing dispute involving retrenched workers seeking compensation payouts.

Police have described the killing as a targeted hit, with no arrests made so far. The murder has shocked the legal community and prompted condemnation from the Justice Minister and the Law Society of South Africa.

It highlights the growing risks faced by legal professionals amid South Africa’s high levels of violent crime.

South Africa has become killing fields with sins of such a nature that justice demands bloodlines.

The government has no answer.
