In 2010 Court McGee barely had enough money to get to the tryouts for TUF 11. He had a wife, a kid, the full responsibilities of a man. But still he had a dream. He visualized himself holding that TUF trophy while he was sitting in a bathtub with his son. When he got out of that bathtub he went and made it a reality.
That was 16 years ago. Early Ultimate Fighter, different sport then. The show just wrapped up another season last week. McGee’s still here. 23 seasons later, 41 years old, 29th UFC fight Saturday. It’s the last fight on the four fight deal he signed, on purpose.
He almost left in 2023. C5-C7 discs replaced. But he came back. Maybe just to prove that he could. Then he looked around: three beautiful kids, a marriage, a gym, and a young man’s sport. Court decided it’s time, on his terms.
So he gets the rare goodbye. Home state on an October night, 30 minutes from where he grew up. Salt Lake City. “Bro, when does that happen?” he said this week.
Ask him the highlight and he won’t say the wins or the trophy. He will tell you the days sober. Thousands of them, after an overdose that declared him clinically dead for 8 minutes in 2005. Staying sober is what kept him alive to be able to say goodbye in Utah.
On Saturday night in Salt Lake City, one last walk home. Go crush it, Court.
