happy international whores' (sex workers) day!
it's no secret to everyone how passionate i am about the legal liberation, the history, and the protection of sex workers. here's a little history, from everyone's favourite art historian on this day.
the year is 1970 and the french government is up the ass of SWers (as if they didn't bring the country of France success along with the wine, fashion, and hospitality-- SW is also a hospitality depending on where you go-- industries). police reprisals force SWers to work in private. when things moved to privacy protections for SWers decreased and the cases of violence towards them skyrocketed. after two murders and an unwilling government, sex workers in Lyon France occupied the Saint-Nizier church in rue de Brest and went on mfing strike! the protestors demanded dang political chants, demanded decent working conditions, and an end to stigma! AS WE ALL KNOW STIGMA AND IGNORANCE WILL BE THE DEATH OF PROGRESS! police cleared the church after EIGHT DAYS of protesting and today was therefore declared International Whores' Day as this day marks the starting point of an international movement of sex workers FOR sex workers' rights!
Sex workers are not after your boyfriends. They are not out to be homewreckers. Sex workers are people, with jobs, that are easily respected in other first-world countries, so why the stigma here?
America has a long, rich history with sex workers. Most studies even say without sex work we would not be able to industrialize the Mid and South West. So it begs the question: where does your stigma derive from-- as any other objective and critical thinking person would question.
When it comes to stigmas around sex work, people can trace their discrimination to one (or more) of these three things:
radical white supremacy: many sex workers are marginalized people who exist outside of not only societal norms and binary expectations. they are routinely oppressed through massive forms of radical white supremacy.
radical christianity/puritanical views: the way radical christianity oppresses sexual expression through shame and capitalizes off of it.
the patriarchy: the idea of self-sufficient individuals outside of traditional work models tends to hurt the perpetual abuse of the patriarchy.
so what is the root of your intolerance?
with love and hope, (last photo) the inscription on Belle in Amsterdam's red light district says "Respect sex workers all over the world". and truer words have never been spoken. 🖤
to all my whores, i love you. i will continue to fight for you until my dying breath. may we all find peace and serenity.
