As an alum of the program, I am so disappointed in the University. Decades of hard work undone with one short-sighted decision.
As a coach who is all too familiar with having a program cut, my heart breaks for the players and staff.
Hurst Hockey Family✊🏼☘️
Mercyhurst named a head coach in waiting, asked people to donate to men’s hockey for Giving Day, then cut the program two days later. A program that helped build the school’s identity deserved better. So did the players, coaches, alumni, and supporters.
Only one D1 program was cut, and that was the Hockey team. Cowardice stuff.
Gutted for all the Mercyhurst players, coaching staff and alumni, who in mere seconds, just lost everything. Hope they all land on their feet somewhere else. 🙏🏻😢
A program with nearly 40 years of history and multiple NCAA tournament appearances... gone.
Brutal news for all the players, staff, and college hockey as a whole.
Embarrassing. The sport that built this university all done in a snap of a finger. No real numbers told to us with very little real knowledge told to us.
I know the past few years have been challenging for @HurstMHockey, but the program carries a deep tradition and was, for a long time, the only Division I program at @MercyhurstU.
Countless dedicated people have invested years into building and supporting this team, which makes the abrupt way it’s being cut especially difficult to accept.
My heart goes out to the players who wore that jersey with pride and represented a small school with so much passion.
This isn’t how it should end.
This was posted 24 hours before they announced they cut the program. I say “announced” because the decision was made before yesterday, and they still asked for hockey donors to give money.
Embarrassing by the Mercyhurst administration.
Feel for the players and coaches.
"I know he was watching. Him and my grandpa... he would have been the one who was the most proud and bragged about it the most."
Swansea's Clayton Keller is a gold medalist! I caught up with him post game, and asked about thinking of his late father in this special moment:
🚨 SPOT THE DIFFERENCE 🇺🇸
“Just because I wear the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S.”
— Hunter Hess (finished 10th)
"This is all about our country right now. I love the USA... We're so proud to be Americans."
— Jack Hughes (WON GOLD 🥇)
"Clayton has been the just the best wherever he played. That's legit."
Swansea, Illinois native Clayton Keller has represented his country on the national stage many times over the years. Now, he gets to do it in the #Olympics.
