According to records, the man had been arrested 64 times (accruing 11 convictions) in Chicago alone since 2009. Nearly two dozen of those arrests were for domestic violence offenses or violations of protective orders.
As the armed victim intended to detain the injured robber at gunpoint, but the second suspect jumped into an SUV and tried to run over the victim. The victim was able to dodge the SUV while firing several rounds at the driver, striking and ultimately killing him.

The incident started when the two robbed a man at gunpoint outside of a 7-Eleven, then went inside the store to rob the clerk. The initial robbery victim grabbed a gun from his car and confronted the robbers as they left the store, shooting and injuring a 19-year-old suspect.
The intruder - who was wearing gloves and carrying a screwdriver - had a lengthy criminal history, with multiple prior convictions for burglary and identity theft. He'd been released from prison on parole in February.
