Kolkata, June 4: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal met West Bengal Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata on Thursday to discuss a comprehensive maritime development roadmap aimed at transforming West Bengal into Eastern India’s leading maritime and logistics hub.

The Centre has proposed investments worth ₹19,209 crore by 2031 under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, with projects expected to generate over 62,500 direct and indirect employment opportunities across the state.

During the meeting, the leaders reviewed plans related to port modernization, inland waterways, shipbuilding, logistics infrastructure, and port-led industrial development. Key projects include the Balagarh Multimodal Logistics Hub, expansion and mechanisation of Kolkata and Haldia docks, development of shipbuilding and ship repair facilities, strengthening inland waterways, cruise tourism infrastructure, riverfront redevelopment, and creation of port-based industrial clusters.

New Delhi: In a major step towards improving food safety and hygiene in railway catering services, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a 24x7 Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based monitoring system across its base kitchens nationwide. The initiative aims to ensure that passengers receive safe, hygienic, and high-quality meals on trains and at railway stations.

The decision follows several complaints regarding food quality in railway catering services. Recently, the Ministry of Railways imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh on IRCTC after poor-quality curd was served on the Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express. The catering contractor responsible for supplying the food was also fined ₹50 lakh.

More than 2,394 AI-powered cameras have been installed in over 800 IRCTC base kitchens across the country. Unlike conventional CCTV cameras, these advanced systems can automatically detect nine categories of hygiene and safety violations during food preparation. The AI technology is capable of identifying even small contaminants, such as insects or hair strands measuring just 7–8 millimetres, helping maintain stringent food safety standards.

From $7.3 billion to $70 million. That is not a typo.

Vanguard, one of Ola Consumer's earliest institutional backers, has marked down its valuation of the Bhavish Aggarwal-led ride-hailing company to approximately $70.3 million. That is a fall of over 99% from its 2021 peak. The fund originally invested $51.7 million in 2015 when Ola was valued at $5 billion. Today, Vanguard carries that stake at around $728,000.

The backdrop makes it harder to write this off as a methodological footnote. @Olacabs Consumer's revenue fell 42% in FY25, losses widened, and rivals Uber and Rapido are growing. Rapido, for context, just valued itself at $3 billion.

The awkward timing: Ola is preparing for an IPO. Valuations, as we've seen before, can be rebuilt. But the fundamentals need to follow.

The number on Vanguard's books today is $70.3 million. That is not the end of Ola's story. But it is, without question, a very uncomfortable chapter.

The new member will be elected by the members of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The last date for filing nominations is June 8, 2026. Nomination papers will be accepted at Vidhan Bhavan, Mumbai, between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the prescribed dates. Scrutiny of nominations will take place at 12:00 noon on June 9, 2026, at Vidhan Bhavan.

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra modi has approved a major highway infrastructure project in Madhya Pradesh worth ₹4,415.60 crore. The project involves upgrading and widening key sections of National Highway-347B (NH-347B) over a total length of 233.653 kilometres under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

Under the approved plan, the Hiwarkhedi–Roshni–Ashapur–Rudhy section of NH-347B, spanning 125.01 km, will be upgraded from an intermediate lane to a two-lane road with paved shoulders. Additionally, the Deshgaon–Julwaniya section, covering 108.643 km, will be widened from two lanes to four lanes.

The project aims to address several infrastructure challenges, including sharp curves, geometric deficiencies, and traffic congestion in built-up areas across the districts of Betul, Khandwa, Khargone, and Barwani. A 16.20-km Greenfield bypass around Khargone will also be constructed as part of the project.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will establish a dedicated Maratha Reservation Cell to assist citizens in matters related to reservation records, Kunbi caste certificates, and caste validity certificates, Water Resources Minister and Chairman of the Maratha Reservation Sub-Committee, Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, announced on Wednesday.

To support applicants facing difficulties in obtaining certificates, helpline services will be launched at district collector offices across the state. In addition, a dedicated helpline number (9326562815) has been made operational at the minister's office in Mantralaya and will be available during office hours.

The announcement was made following a meeting of the Maratha Reservation Sub-Committee held at Mantralaya. The meeting was attended by several state ministers, legislators, senior bureaucrats, divisional commissioners, district collectors, and representatives of various government agencies.

Vikhe-Patil directed all departments to work in coordination to ensure the timely implementation of commitments made regarding the Maratha reservation issue. He stressed that officials must handle the matter with utmost seriousness and sensitivity, warning that negligence would not be tolerated.

Addressing participants, President Murmu described the conclave as a gathering of “tribal change agents” and urged officials and stakeholders to ensure that welfare and development schemes reach tribal communities directly at the grassroots level. The President emphasized that the ultimate purpose of every government project is to improve people's lives. The Department of Youth Affairs under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, through Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), has launched the first phase of the Viksit Vibrant Village Program (VVVP) 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen grassroots engagement, promote national integration, and support sustainable development in India’s border villages.

A total of 500 MY Bharat volunteers have been selected through a nationwide online quiz competition that attracted participation from more than three lakh young people. The volunteers, representing all States and Union Territories, will be deployed in two phases across identified border villages in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

During the first phase, 250 volunteers will engage with communities in 43 border villages, while the remaining 250 volunteers will participate in the second phase later this month across 50 additional villages.

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra modi has approved a major two-year initiative aimed at reducing air pollution and promoting cleaner transportation across the Delhi-NCR region. The scheme, with a total financial outlay of ₹9,585 crore, will be funded through the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, in coordination with the governments of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

Under the programme, owners of approximately 2.07 lakh commercial vehicles—including 1.91 lakh trucks and 16,329 buses registered in Delhi-NCR—will be encouraged to replace older vehicles complying with BS-IV or earlier emission standards with BS-VI-compliant vehicles or electric vehicles (EVs).

Lamborghini just did what the auto industry needed to see.

The Lanzador EV is dead. In its place: a plug-in hybrid, powered by a V8 or V12, arriving closer to 2030. And the world of performance car enthusiasts let out a collective exhale.

When Lamborghini first planned a fully electric fourth model, the logic seemed watertight. EVs were the future, demand was only going to grow, and every major manufacturer was racing toward a battery-powered horizon. But the numbers told a different story. Customer clinics, dealer feedback, and hard market data showed that interest among high-end performance buyers was cooling.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann put it plainly: "It's never about mobility." And that, in six words, is the entire philosophy of every Italian performance marque that has ever existed. You can buy anything to travel. You buy a Lamborghini to move your soul.

This is a decision that goes beyond one model. Ferrari watched its share price drop six per cent in a week after the Luce's design landed to near-universal criticism. Porsche has softened its EV timelines. Across the industry, the great electrification scramble is running into a stubborn reality; that for performance and luxury buyers, a fast car and a great car are not the same thing.

The V12 lives. The V8 lives. The soul of Sant'Agata Bolognese, it seems, lives too.

The Government of India has approved the revision of the base year for the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from 2011–12 to 2022–23 and has also cleared the compilation of new Producer Price Indices (PPIs). The decision was approved by the competent authority on May 25, 2026, following recommendations from the Technical Advisory Committee on Statistics of Price and Cost of Living and discussions at the National Statistical Commission.

The Office of the Economic Adviser under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will officially release the revised WPI series with the new base year of 2022–23 on June 15, 2026, at 12 noon. This new series will replace the current WPI series based on 2011–12.

Alongside the revised WPI, the government will introduce several new Producer Price Indices, including the Output Producer Price Index (OPPI), a Trial Input Producer Price Index (IPPI), and Service Producer Price Indices for seven sectors—Banking, Securities Transactions, Insurance, Pension Fund Management, Railways, Air Passenger Transport, and Telecommunications.
