Starting today, September 1st, Texas will see the implementation of SB20, criminalizing the possession of obscene creative materials that "appear to be child-like." Creative works contain diverse contexts, and ages are often determined within the story. Drawing a line based on the subjective standard of "looking like" is nonsensical, and if it becomes a criminal offense, it will no longer be tolerated as a joke. There is no guarantee that this censorship will reduce the number of real-life criminals. Fear of public backlash may prevent people from taking bold steps immediately after it is enacted. It could have a deterrent effect (as was the case with yesterday's event), and someone could be arrested long before we've forgotten about it. Such laws must not be expanded to other regions, and they must be monitored worldwide. I will continue to raise awareness of this issue with Japanese fans.
