Scientists have identified a mysterious new cell type that appears only during pregnancy and disappears once pregnancy ends.
Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco created one of the most detailed maps ever made of the maternal fetal interface by analysing more than 1.2 million cells involved in pregnancy. During the study, they uncovered a previously unknown cell that seems to play a critical role in controlling how the placenta connects to the uterus.
The newly discovered cells act almost like biological traffic controllers, carefully limiting how deeply fetal cells grow into the uterine lining while still allowing enough blood flow and oxygen to reach the developing baby. When this balance fails, serious complications such as preeclampsia and placenta accreta can occur.
Scientists say the discovery offers an important new framework for understanding healthy pregnancies and identifying the exact molecular pathways involved when complications develop.
The research may also help explain why cannabinoids use during pregnancy has been associated with low birth weight and premature delivery. The cells contain receptors that react to cannabinoids, raising concerns that substances such as THC could disrupt how the placenta regulates oxygen and nutrient exchange.
By identifying which cells are most vulnerable to genetic or environmental risks, researchers hope the findings could eventually lead to more precise treatments for pregnancy loss and other pregnancy related disorders.
The study represents a major step forward in maternal medicine, giving scientists an unprecedented look at one of the most complex and least understood systems in human biology.

@Mazi_Chinonso1 Just for you to understand further; if you want to talk how you met your wife, you wouldn’t start telling me about how you met your girlfriends, your 💔 etc. you’ll focus on your wife! Info about other women will only come in if it becomes relevant. 😄
@Mazi_Chinonso1 So indeed, Adam & his wife had other children. However, the focus of the story isn’t them, it’s Cain & his brother. Information about the other people is immaterial
@Mazi_Chinonso1 I am a Scientist and when I’m reporting my scientific findings, I always have an interest. I do not report irrelevant data even if they were generated during the research. All writers focus on relevant information to drive a point. Same applies to the Bible.
New study: chemically boosting gut bacteria’s metabolism increases colanic acid and extends lifespan in worms—hinting at future microbiome-based longevity tools. Promising, but still very early science.
