Halperin Park (Southern Gateway Deck Park) is a five-acre bridge park spanning Interstate 35E between Ewing and Marsalis Avenues, directly adjacent to the Dallas Zoo. This “park with a purpose” will transform the city’s southern sector and be a key catalyst for closing the opportunity gap that was created when the highway was originally built in the 1950s through the middle of Oak Cliff.
The park just opened this weekend and is already a vibrant addition to this part of Southern Dallas! Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from the design team who brought this transformative space to reality!
Halperin Park will attract an estimated 2 million visitors annually and is predicted to generate more than $1 billion in economic impact in its first five years. In addition to native landscape and ample green space, park amenities include: a bandshell for concerts and live events, an inclusive children’s playground, outdoor classroom space, a multi-purpose building for dining and community events, integrated history exhibits, a dedicated food truck area, interactive water features, and so much more. Together with the Dallas Zoo’s Master Plan, the collective capital investment in this area exceeds $250 million, the largest investment in Southern Dallas in decades.
Join us this Wednesday evening to hear first hand accounts from the architects, landscape architect and contractor who designed and carefully guided this park to life.
On the 62nd anniversary of the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Dallas’ current mayor Eric L. Johnson, city manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert, and city council members must resolve to not bring another lasting stain to the city by allowing the destruction of our I M Pei designed City Hall.
· I M Pei designed Dallas City Hall to move forward from the shadow of the Kennedy assassination. Dallas’ visionary mayor J. Erik Jonsson (in office 1965-1971) championed this landmark initiative.
· City Hall is an iconic building by this Pritzker Prize laureate.
· I M Pei was personally selected by Jackie Kennedy to design JFK’s Presidential Library in Boston, and the Dallas City Council voting to sell Pei’s cornerstone contribution to Dallas’ civic history so it can be demolished would be another shameful stain on the city.
