The email that changed Jalen Royals' life was not meant for him.

It went out to a whole list of players. He read it like a personal invitation.

Tonight on Sunday Night Football, on fourth down, Patrick Mahomes rolled right and found him in the back of the end zone for his first NFL touchdown.

Here is how he got there.

Royals grew up in Powder Springs, Georgia. Hillgrove High School. Football, basketball, track. He finished sixth in the state in the high jump.

As a senior he caught 26 passes.

Rivals did not rate him. 247 did not rate him. LSU talked to him about walking on. Zero Division I scholarship offers.

He is honest about why.

"Probably my grades."

So he went to junior college. Georgia Military College in Milledgeville.

He caught 7 passes all season.

He has said JUCO nearly killed the NFL dream. In his words, it "was more just sucked out, I guess."

Then the email showed up.

It came from Utah State's director of player personnel. Royals thought Utah State wanted him.

Utah State had no idea who he was.

He went anyway. He and his dad DeAndre traveled 1,600 miles to Logan, Utah for a summer camp.

Before it started, he walked up to Utah State assistant Kyle Cefalo and introduced himself.

Then he ran a 4.28 in the 40. Cefalo said he JOGGED it.

Then he broad jumped 10 feet 10 inches.

"I'm watching this kid trying to figure out what's wrong with him."

Nothing was wrong with him. Utah State offered him a scholarship within a week.

And then his first season in Logan, he played in 12 games and caught ZERO passes.

"He never stopped learning, he never stopped working," Cefalo said.

The next year he caught 68 passes for 1,023 yards and 15 touchdowns. The most touchdown catches in a single season in Utah State history.

His senior year got cut short by an injury. Cefalo still called him "one of a kind."

The Chiefs drafted him anyway. Fourth round, 133rd overall, 2025.

His entire rookie season: 2 catches. 4 yards.

His first NFL catch did not come until Week 18.

Tonight the Chiefs opened the second half with a 14 play drive and got to the Colts 1 yard line.

The Colts stuffed three straight runs.

Fourth and goal.

Mahomes rolled right, kept looking, and threw it to the back of the end zone.

Jalen Royals. First NFL touchdown.

It put the Chiefs up 24-20. They needed every point of it.

Chiefs 33, Colts 30. In overtime.

No stars. No offers. A JUCO season with 7 catches. A college season with zero. A mass email he decided was meant for him.

The touchdown was 1 yard.

It took him 1,600 miles to get there.
