What happens to ecosystem functioning when resident forest birds can’t persist in tropical working lands? Migratory birds may step in. Our @Oikos_Journal study shows how migratory birds help sustain ecosystem functions in pastures & secondary forest. 🐦🕷️

Our study also shows equal migratory richness across a habitat quality gradient, suggesting local overwintering habitat selection. Abundance bumps in modified habitats could be due to competitive exclusion by territorial males in primary forest. Hoping to look into this more!
Looking for a PhD lab in ecology and evolution? I'm recruiting for Fall 2025. Applications to the University of Arizona EEB program are due Dec. 1. For more information visit https://t.co/4N9e2Nf833 and please share!
Has ecological succession been ignored in global analysis of local biodiversity trends? Thought provoking piece by Ingmar Staude and colleagues @idiv, with ideas on how time series and space for time analysis may differ! https://t.co/0GfBwU5HrS

A huge thank you to the people of Palenque and my coauthors. We hope we can use this info to work with landowners and federal park officials in the study area to enact some measures to protect declining species, most of which are forest specialists and small and large birds.
Our work on bird occupancy in southeast Mexico is out in @AnimalEcology! We wrote a method to identify true absences when sampling effort varies over years and found the ‘winning’ and ‘losing’ birds and functional groups over 120 years of land-use change https://t.co/w1qKOV0f8e
At last the pins have been forged! Thanks to all that participated and votes. For my first pins, I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. Order forms are available here! https://t.co/AR46vNOecx
Check out this excellent read and important study on bird community responses to COVID lockdowns! Important implications for sustainable city planning for people and birds.
Application deadline is Nov 15th to apply for a #PhD with me @UCSC_ENVS studying conservation ecology with a strong spatial and tropical focus. Read on for details!
📢In 2019, I had the honor to witness Lumi, one of the black howler females I was studying 🐒, give birth in plain daylight after ~8 hours of labor. Today,
@sarievanbelle and I can finally share the details of that event in my first first-author paper! https://t.co/TX4tl2cVGR
RT/The Conservation Ecology group (@birdmapper) in the Environ. Studies Dept @ucsc invites applications for PhD students for Fall 2023. Our research focuses on using spatial tools 🗺️to inform🦜conservation prioritization and action in biodiversity hotspots 🌎. Interested? (🧵)
🔊🥰 After two looooong years, this was the best way to be reunited with old friends before a new field season! The family seems to have grown since I last saw them pre-pandemic.
Today (May 22) we celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity. Here, some insight into the diversity at #PalenqueNationalPark, Chiapas, Mexico. #BiodiversityDay
