Happy #HolgaWeek2025!
Today at lunch time I am doing my annual #HolgaWeek photo walk and sandwich run. I will walk and shoot a variety of Holga cameras until I happen upon a nice sandwich shop that will remain nameless.
I have my Holga 120GCFN, Holga 135BC, Holga 120GCFN Gold, and Holga 3D cameras in my bag. Not sure I'll get to all of them, but I'm sure to get a lot of winning Holga shots today.
You have from October 1 through October 7 to take your winning Holga pics. Don't leave home without your Holga camera.
Have a great time!
The Curse of Goatman's Bridge
Warning: This true tale is not for the squeamish photog.
In the next @donsusedphoto video, Todd and I discuss the delightful time #MamaHolga and I had on #MothersDay this year. She wanted to photograph something interesting and found Old Alton Bridge (aka Goatman's Bridge) near Denton, Texas.
Goatman's Bridge is a true tale of a successful Black goat farmer, Oscar Washburn, and his family. His success caught the attention of local Klansmen who hung Mr. Washburn from the bridge in August 1938. However, after throwing Mr. Washburn over the bridge, the Klansmen found the noose empty. The Goatman was never seen again. The Klansmen killed the remaining Washburn family. Stories about seeing ghosts on the bridge continue today.
See. How could I say no to my mother on Mother's Day?
We had a lovely time photographing the bridge. It was very close to the road with a nice parking area and trails. #MamaHolga shot with her smartphone and I shot with my new-to-me @Hasselblad 500C for the first time.
We did not see any Goatman or ghosts. A good time was had by all. Or so I thought.
Fast forward to the next day when I decided to finish the roll in my Hasselblad. I took the last shots in the #MrsHolga Bird & Butterfly Sanctuary. Having never shot a Hasselblad before, I advanced the film to the last shot and then kept advancing the film, which went on and on and on and on.
I was pretty sure no backing paper was this long. I did not feel the end release. I decided to open the film back and see what had happened.
And there it was. The first Curse of Goatman's Bridge.
My @Kodak Portra 800 backing paper had ripped at the start of the roll. Not a single shot was taken.
In all my years of shooting 120 format film, I have never had the backing paper tear.
Undeterred, I loaded my Hasselblad with the new Kentmere PAN 200 film. Todd gave me a roll when we reviewed the new film. I love the results of the Kentmere PAN 200. And I still wanted to shoot my Hasselblad.
Yesterday, Todd and I recorded the latest, greatest Don's Used Photo Equipment video, where I mention most of the events above.
This is where the curse really kicks in.
I only took one smartphone shot of Goatman's Bridge, which was a portrait, not landscape. I asked #MamaHolga if she had a shot in landscape, but atlas, she did not. Curses!
Since the bridge was not that far away, and #MrsHolga is working today, and there is a @Whataburger along the way, I decided to grab lunch and reshoot Goatman's Bridge.
Lunch was a #4 Jalapeño & Cheese Whataburger with added bacon, in case you needed to know. Or in case Whataburger want to sponsor a #filmtographer.
My first visit to Goatman's Bridge with #MamaHolga was only from the top. We did not go down any trails or steep hills. But that is exactly what I wanted to do to get a side view of the bridge.
I got down to the bank, just a foot away from the water's edge. I set up my @NikonUSA Z30 to get some video for the video. I screwed the tripod mount to the Z30 and then the mounting plate clicked onto my @manfrotto_us BeFree Advanced tripod.
I took a moment to observe the snake swimming across the stream under the bridge. I'd love to tell you it was a water moccasin or such, but it was too far to tell. It sure made me realize how truly not at home I was at the moment.
I was about to start recording when I decided to raise the tripod legs for a better angle.
And that's when it happened.
You should really, really stop reading now if you love cameras.
My Nikon Z30.
Which I thought was secured to the top of my Manfrotto tripod.
Took a dive into the stream.
It bounced once and disappeared into the muddy water.
Shit!
Shit! Shit! Shit!
Shit!
If bravery is the feeling of being scared to do something, but doing it anyways, then I bravely started searching for my Nikon Z30 in the muddy water with my bare hands.
Remember, I had just saw what I was sure to be a water moccasin or some other snake. This stream is the complete opposite of crystal clear. And now I'm sticking my hands into where I cannot see to feel around for my camera. There's no telling what nasty things are just below the surface.
My heart was pounding.
I could feel rocks.
I could feel grass.
I kept feeling around, but could not feel my camera.
I was leaning over and reaching into the stream. I could have tipped head first into the water any second.
I reached a little farther than I liked and finally felt my camera.
That was an expensive adventure.
But I was not done yet.
I still needed to get my Goatman's Bridge shots for the video.
I returned my Nikon Z30 Wet & Wild Edition to my truck and headed back to the bridge for a few final Hasselblad shots.
It was there the last part of the Curse of Goatman's Bridge set upon me: mosquitoes. Lots and lots of mosquitoes. This area is a swamp like no other.
I only had three shots left, but I was under attack by @NFL linebacker size mosquitoes. I got no less than 3-4 bites for standing still each time. These mosquitoes were out for my blood. All of it.
I clicked shot twelve and got the hell out of there.
I called Todd before leaving the parking area. I was still slapping mosquitoes on my legs as I was driving.
I told Todd what had happened to the Nikon Z30, just like Alice's Restaurant Massacree in five part harmony. The very same Nikon Z30 we use to record all our videos.
And Todd, bless his heart, without missing a beat, asked, "Is our last video okay?"
I'm not sure if any of our videos are okay, but I did download the last video this morning. It will premiere later this week.
And yes, we'll probably be talking about this adventure in a future video. Stay tuned.

Somewhere in Dallas, Texas during a @DallasPhotoWalk event at the @dallaslibrary in 2017. This was a very quick response to a @DallasFireRes_q firetruck screaming by with lights and siren. Taken with my Holga 120 PAN. I may have clicked the shutter twice ... on purpose.
The rumor of my demise has been greatly exaggerated. I am alive and mostly well. So well, that Todd and I recorded a new video last night. Hope you can join us for the premiere tonight at 7 PM CT. See you there!
