An arborist, an anthropologist, and a Comanche tribal officer created this book. A genuine marker tree is a rare find—only 6 of these cultural treasures have been officially documented in Texas and recognized by the Comanche Nation. All six are located in Dallas County.

It is still #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth and today’s #ReadWithDTRHT’s book is Mexican Americans in a Dallas Barrio by Shirley Achor. It vividly describes barrio life in Dallas. Achor’s portrayal of the residents challenges stereotypes of traditional Mexican American culture.
Mr. John Thomas, formerly a Pullman Porter, served as a Church Custodian from 1924 to 1959. This artwork is offered as a reparation for the racial discrimination he experienced in his career at Broadway. The portrait will have a permanent and prominent placement in the church.
Dallas TRHT had the honor of attending the John Thomas Memorial Portrait Dedication and Reparations Service at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where they unveiled a portrait of Mr. Thomas painted by renowned artist Sedrick Huckaby. We appreciate the shoutout & partnership!
This was, in part, the culmination of Broadway Baptist Church’s racial equity project as participants in our 2023 Racial Equity NOW Fort Cohort. Congratulations Broadway Baptist & Dallas TRHT racial equity coach MiShon Landry for your work to make Fort Worth more equitable!
