College Football Coaches - Please feel free to contact me immediately on January 19th after the transfer portal window closes. I have several kids that qualify both academically and athletically for your programs. They don't care if the level of play is: PostGrad, JUCO, NAIA, D3, or D2. They just want a opportunity‼️🙌🏿 -Thank you 🤝🏿
Getting the most out of Coaching Clinics...
It's football clinic season. Clinics can be very valuable or a big waste of time. Here are 10 tips to help you get the most out of these opportunities.
1. Have a plan before you go.
Everyone at the clinic is at a different place in their career. Before you go, think about the topics you need to improve upon. Think about questions you can ask and people you may need to meet. If you don't already have an off-season priority list of what you are going to work on, develop one now.
2. Look for better ways to do what you are already doing.
Everyone practices, everyone works 3rd downs, everyone works situations, everyone tackles, etc. If it is something "everyone" does, then it is a good thing to focus on at a clinic. PRACTICE is a great focus. Think of ways you can practice better and let that be your theme for the clinic.
3. Don't always go to the speaker from the biggest school.
Find people like you. You may be more helped by a D3 coach or a small high school coach than someone who is at a big school or has a situation much different than yours. Some of the best things I picked up over the years were in rooms that were half full because everyone was next door listening to Michigan St. DB coach or a nine-time state champion talk about how they "have players just like you".
4. Write down the important things.
You do not need to take pages and pages of notes. Pick a few things and put them in your phone or write them down and make a point to go back to that list when you get back home and implement those notes into your plan. The follow up is much more important than the actual notes.
5. Think technical over tactical.
90% of sessions seem to be dedicated to "tactical" football while only 10% of coaches call plays. Find "technical" sessions. You need to use the clinics to gain a drill, improve a practice session, teach a technique better, etc. Look for something you can adapt to your system more than trying to pick up an entire scheme over a weekend.
6. Picking up 1 thing compounds over time.
Instead of thinking of "picking up 1 thing" at the clinic, think of it as "picking up 1 thing" over and over. So after hours and hours, for a few days, you should have picked up a lot of "1 things." The key is to take all these "1 things" and actually implement them when you get back to work.
7. Special Teams can be special.
I have found the special teams sessions are usually lightly attended and those coaches are more likely to talk practice, drills, have film, etc. Since special teams scheme is pretty limited, it is likely they are talking about something similar to what you do. You can get some helpful, practical knowledge in the special teams sessions.
8. Be a double agent.
If you find yourself looking for something to do, go in a scheme session on the other side of the ball. This is probably more helpful than going into a scheme talk on the side you coach. Learn the language, mentality, and ideas of the dark side.
9. Take time to build your current staff culture.
If you are going as a group on your current staff, take that time to bond. Due to everyone's busy schedule, you may not get many chances to get away together as a staff. This can be a great time to enjoy each other and get better as a staff!
10. Take advantage of networking opportunities.
This may be the most important tip. It is highly likely that the networking opportunities you have are more important than the content of the clinic. Go introduce yourself to some people you may can learn from. Some of the best clinics I ever attended involved the hotel bar and some napkins with diagrams.
