32 Killed In Nigerian Air Force Aircraft Crash In Ondo, Nigeria

Thirty-two people have died after a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed near Igbokoda in Ondo State, Nigeria, on Monday.

The aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members when it crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, according to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

The aircraft was travelling from Benin in Edo State to Lagos on a routine military mission when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 09:13 local time.

Keyamo said repeated attempts to establish radio contact with the aircraft were unsuccessful. The wreckage was later located close to the Naval Base in Igbokoda, where search and rescue operations were launched.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed that the aircraft belonged to the service and said it had activated an immediate search and rescue operation in coordination with relevant authorities and emergency agencies.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the families of the 32 people who died and ordered the Nigerian Air Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

“This is a painful moment for our Armed Forces and for the entire nation,” Tinubu said, adding that Air Force personnel put their lives on the line every day in service of Nigeria.

The President also commended the Nigerian Air Force, first responders and the Ondo State Government for their response following the crash.

The cause of the crash has not yet been established and remains under investigation.

Authorities are expected to provide further details about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the crash as the investigation continues.
