So Carl is such an interesting example of how men can fully understand misogyny, and disagree with it, but are still sometimes complacent in it.

As someone close to Carl’s age, the whole idea of “locker room talk” feels very Boys Will Be Boys. Do I think Carl is a bad person? No. And do I think he hates women? Also No. I think he adores Aniya very much and clearly doesn’t agree with what KC said. But I also think that he (like a lot of other well-meaning men) will hear misogyny from others and brush it off as harmless to avoid challenging the status quo.

Since he’s a man who has spent most of his life in sports and in the fitness world, I think a lot of this misogynistic shit is just normalized to him so he feels more inclined to shrug it off.

Yes it’s a long one because that tweet pissed me off.

This is exactly the kind of thinking that makes the workplace harder for women.

As a team lead myself, leading 10 men and two women in a male dominated space, this has refused to leave my head.

Has anyone ever looked at me that way?

Has someone ever taken a professional disagreement, a challenging conversation, or a moment where I had to hold someone accountable, and reduced it to a future sexual fantasy?

That thought is uncomfortable.

Women have to be confident but not “too much”. Direct but not “aggressive”. Firm but still “likable”.

We have to lead, make decisions, challenge people, and set boundaries while knowing that some people may still view our authority through a completely different lens.

How did we get to a place where a woman exercising leadership can be interpreted through anything other than leadership?
