In defence of the damp industry;
1) finding the cause of damp is complex & time consuming (but hiding it is easy),
2) no organisation teaches damp surveying empirically (evidence not just theory),
3) although I'm against hiding damp with slurry, it can appear to work for awhile!

My colleague observed damp patch on wall, but rest of wall was dry. Why?

Sad case of impermeable cement repointing trapping water, damaging stonework and causing internal damp. If only they’d used a lime based permeable mortar. At least it’s easy to rectify.

@preservit Great find, virtually every time there’s a solid floor we find plaster absorbing damp from the floor. Very quick and inexpensive to fix, just trim the last 30mm under the skirting. Job done.

Agreed, energy is wasted in retro-fitting cavity wall insulation or double glazing.

Damaging for the environment and results in unforeseen damp problems.
Double glazing typically needs repacing before end of pay back.

Most cases it's both bad for the environment and uneconomic

@PeteWard7 @GEOFFHUNTBSS Cavity walls are rare in London. I had one at a house purchase. Banks refused to lend as Rosewood said there was rising damp. Cause; boiler stopped in 2016, owner passed away. Son didn't open windows = Interstitial condensation including cavity wall aided by mice. Solution vent.

Evaporation & condensation are in constant equilibrium. Above the dew point moisture evaporates, below humidity condenses.

Almost all external dampness comes from rain.

Interstitial condensation is a simplification, the line relates to dew point.
