I loved talking to @NPR's @MeghnaWBUR for On Point last summer. They re-aired the interview this weekend if you're curious to give it a listen! Link in comments.
In his strongest condemnation yet of the Trump-Vance war against Iran, Pope Leo XIV said today:
“We are surrounded by a delusion of omnipotence that’s becoming increasingly unpredictable and aggressive.”
“We are met by threats instead of invitations to come together.
“Those who pray don’t threaten death. Death enslaves those who have turned their backs on God and turned themselves and their own power into a mute, blind, and deaf idol.
“They demand the whole world bends their knee. Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war!
“True strength is shown in serving life!”
Charles Barkley on CBS tonight:
“The way some of these immigrants are getting treated in our country right now is a travesty and a disgrace. What we’re doing to some of these amazing immigrants is really unfortunate and really sad.”
Charles Barkley is not a politician. Not an activist. Not a Democrat. He is one of the most beloved sports figures in American history saying this on national television.
An Iranian man left this comment on my YouTube channel. This is without a doubt the single best explanation of the reality facing Iranian people today👇
"As an Iranian, I can tell you the situation is no longer just political—it's existential. We are trapped between two collapsing structures: one internal, one external. On one hand, we face a deeply dysfunctional government, led by the Supreme Leader and the Islamic Republic’s unelected institutions.
Decades of economic mismanagement, suppression of dissent, and brutal ideological control have alienated multiple generations. No one believes in reform anymore—because every attempt has either been co-opted or crushed. But here's the paradox: We are also terrified of regime collapse—because we've watched the aftermath of Western intervention in countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan. Each was promised freedom; each descended into chaos, civil war, or foreign occupation.
So no, we don't trust the U.S. or Israel. Not because we support our regime—but because we know how imperial powers treat ‘liberated’ nations in the Middle East.
Freedom, in their language, often means vacuum, fire, and permanent instability. Right now, many Iranians live with three truths at once: The Islamic Republic is morally and politically bankrupt. The alternatives offered by foreign actors are not liberation—they’re collapse.
A bad government is survivable. No government is not. We are not silent because we agree. We are cautious because we’ve learned—too well—what happens when superpowers decide to "help." In a sentence: Iran is a nation held hostage by its own regime, but haunted by the fate of its neighbors. We are stuck in a house we hate, surrounded by fires we fear more."
@rcamcole@rydercup And then he does the stupid little Trump dance, to which the announcer says "The president does it better". Can't root for these clowns
“And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords, and I’d like to remind them that, as a trusted TV personality, I could be helpful rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.” (K. Brockman)
Charlie Kirk’s death is a tragedy. It should never have happened. The promise of a free country, the reason the USA was founded, is to create a place where we express our disagreements through votes, not violence. Full stop.
@JamesSurowiecki MAGA is able to compartmentalize to such a degree that they can convince themselves that Trump can be both best friends with Epstein and somehow not in on the abuse.
Things Republicans believed in before Trump:
-States' Rights
-The Constitution
-The Justice System
-Law and Order
-Freedom of Speech
-Rights
-Capitalism
-Limited Government
-Reducing the Debt
-Russia is America's enemy
-Allies should be defended
Not anymore.
Children clung to life in Sudan by the slenderest of threads, supported by community soup kitchens. Then the USAID funding cuts came, and their mothers watched them starve to death one by one. https://t.co/ZZVmidOS9c
