The screen in the movie theater briefly shows moments from Mary's murder.
The reason James sees his flashbacks play like a movie is because psychosis and PTSD can cause a person to experience traumatic events like watching a movie, feeling as though they weren't really there.
Two interesting details to note, the camera briefly focuses on Mary's wedding ring while James has taken his own ring off in-game, and Laura was the one who turned on the projector.
