The more I read British fiction, the more I recognize from where Julian Fellowes borrowed. His 2001 film, “Gosford Park” includes the idea of an American guest and his fake butler visiting a manor house. This idea comes from PG Wodehouse’s 1919 comedic novel “Something Fresh.”
@nguyenhdi The Friar and the nurse are responsible for the tragedy in this play. Teenagers will make terrible decisions, of course. That’s why they need adults to guide them. Nurse and Friar fail their duty as the adults in the room.

@BarryPierce Yes, he is depressing, but I think Hardy is the best of all British novelists. The novels are spiritual and philosophical, written with poetic beauty and masterfully crafted plots. I have taught Tess in my eleventh grade British Lit class on and off for 15 years.
